Stop Asking Chatbots for Nutrition Advice: Why AI Could Be a Dangerous Choice

Frivolous uses for artificial intelligence (AI) have exploded in the past few years, with shockingly stupid outcomes. Not only are chatbots doing a worse job of thinking than humans, but relying on them for advice can also actually be harmful. Here’s how asking a chatbot for nutrition advice could get you into big trouble.

Metabolic Damage

Yeah—AI advice could wreck your metabolism. Permanently. In a recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition, chatbots created meal plans with nearly 700 fewer calories than those created by dietitians. It is well documented that a calorie deficit this large can cause permanent metabolic damage over time. While this may not happen in all cases, why risk it? Opt for an online calorie counter created by a human professional, or better yet, do a resting metabolic assessment.

Inaccurate Macros

The same study cited suspicious macronutrient percentages given to teenagers, with recommendations for a low-carb, higher-fat, and protein diet, which would normally be given to adults. The issue with this is that adolescents need higher amounts of carbohydrates than adults to support the growth processes their bodies are going through.

No Imagination

Have you tried recipes created by a bot? They can be hit or miss. Since robots can’t taste, and don’t seem to understand the nuances of sea salt vs. finishing salt or how spices interact, they don’t always make good recipes. In the early days of using ChatGPT and Grok for recipes, a tech writer tried a chatbot recipe, which he admitted could have used a few tweaks to make it better, later calling it a solid recipe.

Robots “Hallucinate”

A lack of imagination doesn’t mean that they won’t give you some surprising results. Chatbots are known to have what are being called “hallucinations,” in which they stop giving helpful answers and instead churn out outright lies and garbage answers, otherwise known as “slop.”

In 2023, a recipe chatbot at a supermarket chain spat out recipes containing non-food items, such as an “aromatic water mix,” which was actually a recipe for chlorine gas. Another user got a recipe for ant poison sandwiches coated in turpentine!

In February 2026, it was reported that users on www.realfood.gov, which is powered by an AI chatbot, were given bizarre advice, including eating raw liver and applying apple or beet juice topically for a recovery boost.

It Makes You Dumber

A December 2025 study, Your Brain on ChatGPT, found that cognitive activity scaled down in relation to search engine and AI tool use. In short, the more people relied on high-tech tools such as chatbots, the more their brains actually switched off!

There’s a popular idea in the cultural zeitgeist right now: tech companies want to put a meter on intelligence and sell it back to us. The first step is this—they need us to stop thinking! Whether or not you believe there might be an evil tech bro out there trying to sell brainpower back to you, wouldn’t it be cool if we didn’t have to find out?

You’re Not Dumb… Yet

You can do the hard thing. Sure, it can be tempting after a hard day to brainstorm ideas using a sort of second brain. Just remember, the one that is in your head is smarter and more creative than you think. For now.

You just have to do the work.
